While AIDS is killing more and more people in France, the focus is on measures taken in transfusion centres to prevent contamination by blood and its derivatives (plasma, platelets and blood cells). We know that 2% of cases are contaminated with the AIDS virus through blood, and we now know that blood products can be contaminated, based on the results of a study of 3,000 bottles of blood hospital in the Paris region. A screening test currently in production at the Pasteur Institute will be used in all blood banks. The specialists interviewed minimise the risk of contamination, citing "healthy" carriers who will never develop the disease. About 10,000 people were reported to have been infected by the AIDS virus unknowingly in the early 1980s as a result of blood transfusions during surgery. For hemophiliacs, one in two would be HIV positive. The question of compensation by insurance companies remains unresolved and hemophiliacs are still waiting for a gesture from the state.
