Thousands of people infected with AIDS
About 10,000 people were reported to have been infected by the AIDS virus unknowingly in the early 1980s as a result of blood transfusions during surgery. For hemophiliacs, one in two would be HIV positive. The question of compensation by insurance companies remains unresolved and hemophiliacs are still waiting for a gesture from the state. In order to prevent new transfusions from making other victims, all samples have been subjected to rigorous biological control since August 1985. Commentary on illustrations, newspaper and infographic images, and interviews with Bruno de LANGRE, president of the French association of hemophiliacs, Michel GARRETTA, Director General of the Centre national de Transfusion sanguine and Michel SIMONNEAU, in charge of the blood bank of the Ambroise PARE hospital.
