The political stakes of cohabitation by René Remond
The political stakes of cohabitation by René Remond
Historian and political scientist René REMOND analyses the situation regarding the possible cohabitation between a president of the republic and an assembly of an opposite party. This situation can arise in every presidential or legislative election. He compares the opposing reactions of President Giscard d'Estaing in 1978 and François Mitterrand in 1981. If the former had said that he would try to govern with a majority against him, the latter expressed his wish to dissolve the Assembly, thus hoping to obtain a parliamentary majority.
