Reading of the statement by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing
Shortly after the announcement of the victory of the socialist candidate François Mitterrand in the 1981 presidential election, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing sent a written statement to the editors of TF1 and France 2. This would be his only reaction to the defeat. Jean-Pierre ELKABBACH, on France 2, reads this statement. The outgoing President wishes to the new President of the Republic. He thinks he did everything he could and thanks those who voted for him and the young people who helped him. He said: "I will of course continue to defend the essential interests of our country".
