The community

In order to solve the problem of decolonization while maintaining France’s relations with its former colonies, Charles DE GAULLE created the "French Community" in the Constitution of the Fifth Republic (1958). This group includes the French Republic, 11 African states and Madagascar. Each of the colonies voted in the referendum of September 1958 for the accession of its country to this Community, or for complete independence. The former colonies thus gained autonomy, with the guarantee of aid from France. The President of the French Republic is also the President of the Community.
