On Saturday, April 22, 1961, a coup de force took place in Algiers. Generals Challe, Salan, Zeller and Jouhaud instituted themselves in "high command". With the support of the 1st Parachute Regiment, they want to try to end the policy of self-determination approved by referendum on January 8. On 23 April 1961, General de GAULLE decided to assume the full powers provided for in Article 16 of the Constitution. He informs the Nation through a speech.
