De Gaulle: "I have never stopped urging our country to assume its independence"

During this press conference, General de Gaulle affirms the independence of France vis-à-vis international organizations like the UN which, in his opinion, would be "only a cover for our submission to American hegemony". He adds: "I have never stopped urging our country to assume its independence." In 1966, France withdrew from NATO’s military command, while remaining a member of the UN.
