Shooting in Roubaix for his new film "Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse", director Arnaud DESPLECHIN explains why he chose his hometown -because of its romantic power and its disused industrial past, for its border city side between France and Belgium- for this film evoking the youth of its character "Paul" played by Mathieu ALMARIC. [Source: France 3 Regions]: Cinema. Director Arnaud Desplechin returns to his hometown of Roubaix. He shoots a part of his new film there from Monday and for about 4 weeks. As he explained to Christelle Massin, it will be a kind of first episode of his first film, "How I Fought", in the 1990s, where Mathieu Amalric starred.

The Roubaisien Arnaud Desplechin is going back in time and is currently shooting his next film in his native region in Roubaix, Lille and Tourcoing. He goes back in time and plunges back into the past of Paul and Esther, the main characters of his partly autobiographical film "How I Fought" of 1996. Two young actors under the age of 20 take on the roles of Emmanuelle Devos and Mathieu Almaric and wear the same emblematic sashes. The scene filmed is that of the separation of the two young lovers on the platform of the station of Tourcoing. Interview with the director Arnaud DESPLECHIN and his young actors: Lou ROY LECOLLINET and Quentin DOLMAIRE taking over the roles of Esther and Paul.

It is inspired by a diverse fact induced by the great social misery evoked in the documentary "Roubaix, Commissariat central" directed by Mosco Boucault. After a microsidewalk with spectators after having seen the film, the director explains, how he wanted through this film, to meet his city and its most deprived inhabitants who meet in a police station, he who had a very protected childhood and always wrote films with characters "more bourgeois".
