The origin of the allocation of seats in the Chamber

Paul REYNAUD, Member of the European Parliament and former President of the Council, on the physical installation of Members in the Chamber. He explains that when the Estates General met in 1789, the nobility was seated at the right hand of King Louis XVI. He assumes that the Republicans did not dare to take this place afterwards. The British Parliament operates differently: whatever the political colour of the deputies, it is their majority or opposition that determines their place.
