Colonel Muammar GADDAFI arrived in France today for a five-day official visit that sparked much controversy. At Orly airport, he was welcomed by the Minister of Defence Michèle ALLIOT MARIE, then at the Elysée Palace by the President of the Republic Nicolas SARKOZY who discussed with him the issue of human rights. His tent and guard were installed in the garden of the hotel Marigny. Excerpt from Nicolas SARKOZY’s speech: "I told President Gaddafi how much progress had to be made on the path of human rights".
