An iceberg on the Seine
On the eve of the G8 Summit, Greenpeace docked a life-size iceberg on the Seine, near the Eiffel Tower, to call on President Nicolas Sarkozy on the urgency of the fight against climate change. Pascal HUSTING: "The melting of the polar caps is one of the effects of climate change. We are using this symbol to appeal to the G8 leaders who will meet tomorrow in Italy to fully assume their historic responsibility in the fight against climate change". Luc LAMPRIERE: "I think that we have not necessarily taken the measure of the gravity of the situation today. In our countries, the richest countries, we are relatively protected from the consequences of climate change, but there are hundreds of millions of people around the world whose lives are threatened by climate change... the poorest countries, those who are least responsible... are now on the front lines".
