Excerpt from the adaptation of Hervé Bazin’s eponymous novel published in 1948, which made him famous. It relates the author’s childhood or rather adolescence in the 1930s, in the Craonnais, near Angers. Revolted against a mother whom he hates and who returns it to him well, Hervé Bazin makes a ferocious indictment against his family and, through her, denounces a certain bourgeoisie where only interest commands alliances.
