Because they are Algerians and fought in the French army during the Algerian War, the harkis were persecuted in their country but not only… The Evian agreements were supposed to guarantee their security, yet when they arrived in France they were placed in transit and reclassification camps with unworthy conditions, and were «buggers» in the eyes of some French people. Since then, the harkis and their descendants have been fighting for the recognition and compensation of the French state.
