Next to Luchino VISCONTI on the set of the program "The guest of Sunday", Maria CALLAS evokes her interpretation of Medea as an actress in the film of Pier Paolo PASOLINI.
The singer Maria CALLAS confides in Bernard GAVOTY: "I am a woman with her weaknesses. But in my profession, you must not have weaknesses or doubts... Yet, I have doubts all the time. In my profession, I know what I want, but I don’t know what I do ... All the time we have fears; not fear of the public, but fear of not doing justice to the art we serve".
On the set of "L'invité du dimanche", Maria CALLAS talks about the "effects" used by some singers of lyrical art that are akin for her to "cheating": "It is our duty to maintain a certain classicism in the Bel canto".
Interviewed by France ROCHE, Maria CALLAS evokes her role in the film "Medea" by Pier Paolo PASOLINI that she has just shot: "I confess, I do not like myself as a woman, as a beauty or as a voice. But I detach myself enough to tell if I am effective as an actress, as an expression, I cannot say that I love myself even in my everyday life ... But I hope the audience will like and understand my interpretation".
Maria CALLAS evokes the difficulties encountered to interpret a lyrical air on stage, and especially "La Sonnambula" by Vincenzo BELLINI: "Everything is much easier in the theatre... This tune is made for a dramatic soprano, but with the Ecole du Bel canto ... It’s very difficult vocally ... On stage, we remain totally lucid and devoted to singing".
