The first appearances of French directors in competition: from Léos Carax to Jacques Audiard, François Ozon, Catherine Corsini, Mia Hansen-Love and Bruno Dumont
Interview with filmmaker François OZON, about his film "Sous le sable". He goes back to the genesis of the scenario, a story he lived as a child: "when I was in the Landes with my parents on vacation, I witnessed the disappearance of a man on a beach and I saw his wife leave with her husband’s belongings, alone".
The filmmaker Jacques AUDIARD is present on the set of the show to present his film "Watch men fall". Interviewed on his transition from writer to director, he explains: "It’s trying...I thought to myself, as I was writing scripts, scripts, I was feeling a bit tired, lonely (...) I thought, well, it would be nice to socialize a little, I’m going to go to the world, I’m going to relax as they say, The journey was brutal..."
Filmmaker Bruno DUMONT is interviewed on his film "The Life of Jesus". He first speaks of the power of cinema to reveal the truth of beings, that this power must be exercised in simplicity, then he specifies: "...it took me a while to come up with simplicity, to understand that everything had to be simple, that it had to be very humble, that the film had to look like nothing..."
Filmmaker Catherine CORSINI is interviewed on the choice of the chief operator for her films. First of all, she says she is impressed by Henri Alekan, who is present on the set and looks back at his vision of light and lighting in cinema: "I have the feeling that it’s good, when you choose a setting, when you choose a place to listen and see what is happening in it at the level of light, at the same time you always recreate something, the natural light doesn’t really exist...".
Interviewed about the genesis of his film "The life of Jesus", the filmmaker Bruno DUMONT explains why he makes films: "It is necessary to awaken, to awaken someone, all the difficulty, that’s why I make films myself, it is to try to awaken the mind...".
Catherine Corsini is present on the set of the show to talk about her film "Les Amoureux". Interviewed, she evokes the character of the two main characters of her film: "...I wanted the characters to be a kind of courage, go like that to the end of things, a will and trace...".
The filmmaker Léos CARAX is present at the Festival du jeune cinéma 81 in Hyères, with his short film "Strangulation blues". Interviewed on what a young filmmaker is, after a period of hesitation, he explains: "Young filmmaker, just because of my age, in the cinema it’s quite young, but here is the festival of young cinema, well I come out of an Italian film, the director must be 50 anyway...so I don’t know"
Interviewed, filmmaker Mia HANSEN LOVE returns to the genesis of her film "The Future": "...I started writing it while I was looking for funding for another film, more to let go of it actually, there was a side of letting go that had to do with the status of women..."
Bernard RAPP receives the director François OZON to talk about his film "Regarde la mer". They evoke the "suspense" present in some scenes of the film. François OZON explains the scriptwriting process he put in place to obtain this tension. It refers to director, screenwriter and film producer Alfred Hitchcock.
