Prime Minister Edith CRESSON’s government is going through a rough patch. Edith CRESSON is interviewed in front of the Socialist Party headquarters in Paris about the social security deficit and rising unemployment. - Edith CRESSON: "As soon as we arrive we are obliged to take measures by definition unpopular, because it is a matter of finding 23 billion (francs) otherwise the Social Security firm. The decision that must be taken first when you are Prime Minister is to save Social Security [...]". It goes on to say that once it has taken certain measures to train people or to fight unemployment, opinion will change. - On unemployment, Edith CRESSON admits that the figures are bad. She says: "[...] growth is at zero, so we can expect a very difficult situation [...]".
