Volcanologists at the bedside of Nyiragongo

Volcanologists at the bedside of Nyiragongo

In the Congo, volcanologists who are checking the Nyiragongo volcano’s eruption fear that the lava flowing into Lake Kivu will explode the enormous quantities of toxic gas buried under the lake, which could rise to the surface. The seismic activity of the volcano remains very strong and volcanologists lack recoil for this type of eruption, very rare, as Jacques DURIEUX explains. Dario TEDESCO, a geologist consultant at the UN, believes that the risks of eruption in the coming months or years are a great danger for the people.
