First statement by François Mitterrand: "I measure the weight of history"
On the evening of 10 May 1981, the announcement of the results of the second round of the presidential election gave victory to the Socialist Party candidate François MITTERRAND. In the evening, from the festive hall of his fief Chateau-Chinon, he made his first statement: "To all I owe the honour and the responsibility of the albinism that deposed me... I will have no other ambition than to justify their trust". After mentioning "my own now lost", he says "I measure the weight of history, its rigour, its greatness, only the national community must meet the demands of the present time. I will act resolutely so that in faithfulness to my commitment she will find the path of necessary reconciliation. We have so much to do together".
