Saturday 15 November at 2.22pm. Employees of the Chantiers de l'Atlantique come to work or visit the largest ship in the world with their family and friends, when suddenly, without anything foreshadowing the tragedy, the gateway to the ship collapses to the ground. About forty people fall 20 meters. The first fallen are crushed by pieces of the metal bridge and the fall of the other victims. Very quickly, the firefighters arrive on site. An emergency rescue unit is installed at the foot of the liner, and the waltz of ambulances begins. The wounded were evacuated to the hospitals of Nantes and Saint Nazaire. The toll is 15 dead and 28 injured. An investigation is open but the circumstances of the accident are still unknown. The mayor of Saint Nazaire, Joël Batteux, the Minister of Social Affairs, François Fillon and Christian Duval, the CGT delegate of Chantiers de l'Atlantique express their emotion at the magnitude of the accident.

A chapel was erected in a business restaurant of the Chantiers to welcome the families and relatives of the victims. This chapel is strictly reserved for them. Other people can witness their pain and gather in the parking lot at the foot of the Queen Mary: tents have been set up for the flower depots and the signature registers. Many inhabitants made the trip because they feel close to the victims as the Chantiers are part of daily life in Saint Nazaire.

The Court of Appeal of Rennes issued its judgment concerning the collapse of the bridge of the Queen Mary 2, in November 2003. The judges were harsher than at first instance. 4 natural persons (2 employees of Endel, 2 employees of Chantiers) were sentenced to suspended prison sentences of 18 months to 2 years. Companies prosecuted as legal entities are also condemned more heavily. Each company will have to pay a fine of 225,000 euros, the maximum penalty. The victims and their families are this time satisfied with this judgment.
