In Rafah, the first border post under the Palestinian Authority was inaugurated. This is the first time that Palestinians control one of their borders. The crossing point between Egypt and the Gaza Strip had been under the control of the Israeli army since 1982. This terminal is the only outlet for the 1.3 million people living in the Gaza Strip. Egypt is the country of compulsory transit for Gazans wishing to travel abroad and banned from staying in Israel. Palestinian customs officers work under the control of 70 European observers. The Israeli authorities are monitoring the border with video surveillance cameras. Ori Ziger, Israeli liaison officer at the Rafah crossing, believes that "the level of cooperation with the Palestinians and Europeans is excellent and that everything is done to make sure we get along".
