François Mitterrand’s visit to the Channel Tunnel in Sangatte

The President of the Republic François MITTERRAND visits the construction site of the tunnel under the Channel, at the well of Sangatte. Pierre MATHERON guides him. He signs a golden book and says he is impressed by the progress of the works. André BENARD listens attentively to François MITTERRAND’s comments to journalists "I can already see the quality of the beginning of the work, which bodes well for the rest, and I am delighted to see so many workers at all levels, managers of talent and professional consciences who will be passionate about the company. This undertaking is of an international dimension, it must be stressed, when we signed the commitment of our two countries with Mrs Thatcher in Lille, we felt that we had really marked the time".
