Speech by R. Badinter on the abolition of the death penalty: tribute to Jean Jaurès
In evoking the chronology of abolitionism in France, from the revolution to the present day, Robert BADINTER pays a vibrant tribute to Jean Jaurès. He recalled how the latter had defended in the House the abolition of the death penalty against Maurice Barrès. After some turmoil in the opposition benches, he quotes one of the key sentences of Jaurès' speech "The death penalty is contrary to what humanity has thought for 2,000 years from above and dreamed of being more noble, it is contrary to both the spirit of Christianity and the spirit of the revolution".
