In the Nordeste, in the Brazilian desert of Sertao, the desolate landscape of half-dead shrubs stretches for hundreds of kilometres. Gabrio MARNOZZI, agronomist, explains that this region suffers from periodic drought, which worsens every 5 to 8 years. That of 1980 emptied the villages of Sertao and caused a dramatic exodus towards the big cities of southern Brazil. This year, with El Nino’s help, it could be even worse.
