Western Mediterranean: coastal development to combat erosion
The French Mediterranean coasts suffer every year from the onslaught of the Mediterranean Sea. Their erosion is progressing. Municipalities are trying to slow down the phenomenon through various improvements. This folder provides an overview of work undertaken on different beaches, such as Sète or Grau du Roi.

On the seaside resort of Port-La-Nouvelle in the Aude, the erosion of the sea has led to a 50% decrease in the range, especially following winter storms. The mayor of the city Henri MARTIN shows on the spot the loss of surface and a building that was damaged. He wants an additional dike.

Lido beach on the Sète side is closed. At this pilot site in Europe, man decided to help nature regain its rights. 250,000 m3 of sand will be taken and poured to widen the beach and rebuild the dune line destroyed by erosion. The road from Sète to Marseillan will be moved back twelve kilometers. The dune cord will be reconstituted by the addition of sand and the installation of ganivelles (wooden barriers) which will allow to retain the sand. Emmanuel EDANE, Ingerop Project Manager, and Dominique SALASSE, Head of Natural Spaces Department Thau agglomeration, give details of the work and expected benefits.

The beach of the Tamarissière in Agde has suffered the effects of erosion and flooding of winter. In order to redevelop it before summer, the town hall of Agde had 17 m3 of sand, dredged in the estuary of Herault. Two protective structures have also been built to help with natural rehabilitation: two ears and a trap with an underwater foot stop.

Work on the Lido beach on the Thau basin continues between Sète and Marseillan. The pumping station has just been activated. Review of the work done for its installation: the installation of drains under the surface. It remains to be seen whether the system is adapted to this particular geographical area, the Lido. To validate the system, scientists will monitor the experiment via 8 cameras responsible for observing the evolution of the rib line. The system will be completed in the fall with another process, submarine, to mitigate the swell. The experiment will last at least 2 years. Interview with Jean-Yves AUDRAN, Managing Director of the Ecoplage company (pump installer), Yvan BALOUIN, Project Manager "Littoral" at the Geological and Mining Research Office, Pierre BOULDOIRE, President of Thau Agglomeration

New wave dams have been installed in Carnon to protect dunes, houses and road infrastructure. Yvon BOURREL, the mayor of Mauguio-Carnon talks about the next developments: more perennial ears. The geographer Benoît DEVILLERS explains how the Grau-du-Roi dike prevents the arrival of sand on the beach of Carnon.

For several years the 12 kilometres of coast of the commune of Grau du Roi have been under attack from the Mediterranean Sea. The dunes of the Pointe de l'Espiguette play less and less their role as protective barrier. The mayor of the city Robert CRAUSTE explains the triple objective of the work in progress: protect the city, economic activities and the fragile natural environment of the Espiguette from flooding. The choice was made to upgrade the existing second-row dune, paths and embankments. Christophe ROSSO, responsible for natural areas of the city explains the reasons for this choice. The sand brought in comes from the area of the Espiguette lighthouse.
