Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin NETANYAHU, during his first foreign policy speech, spoke in favour of the creation of a Palestinian state under certain conditions: "The future Palestinian territory will have to be demilitarized. To each his flag, his anthem but of army, no control of the air space, no entry of weapons, no possibilities to forge alliances with Iran or with the Lebanese Hezbollah". Then Benyamin NETANYAHU expresses his refusal to put an end to the colonization of the West Bank desired by the international community: "I do not wish to build new settlements or confiscate land but we must allow the Israelis settlements to live normally...".
The leader of the Likud party, Benyamin NETANYAHU, is now in a position to form a new government after the general elections. Benyamin NETANYAHU asked the outgoing Foreign Minister, Tzipi LIVNI, a centrist who was also aiming for the post of Prime Minister to join the coalition government he wants to set up. The latter refused and preferred to remain in the opposition. Benyamin NETANYAHU places Iran at the top of his list of priorities and has always been against the formation of a Palestinian state. However, faced with the new US administration of Barack Obama, he will have to moderate his positions.
Difficult resumption of the Israeli-Arab negotiations in Washington for the international conference for peace in the Middle East. Two days before the Israeli general elections, Shimon Peres is neck and neck with his opponent Benyamin NETANYAHU in the polls. Benyamin NETANYAHU, the leader of Likud, has been running an American-style campaign for the past three years, the favourite of young Likud and American television, not to mention his religious electorate, even though his programme seems a little thin for his critics. Philippe PEASTER interviews Benyamin NETANYAHU, in the campaign, when he gets into his car, he says "confident in the elections because the Israeli people want peace and security". A Likud activist recalls his background : "he was an officer in an elite unit, Israeli ambassador to the UN, adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs... He has the makings of a prime minister".
The head of the Israeli government, Benyamin NETANYAHU, protested his innocence in a statement to the members of the Likud and announced that he intended to remain in power, much applauded by his supporters who shouted "Bibi, King of Israel". Claude KLEIN of the Faculty of University Law of Jerusalem explains the democratic consequences of an indictment of Benyamin NEANYAHOU and the various scenarios envisaged. Shimon PERES for his part wishes that Benyamin NETANYAHU be at least suspended from his duties.
