En 1989, dix linguistes font paraître un manifeste à la Une du journal Le Monde, appelant à moderniser l’écriture du Français. Claude HAGEGE, professeur au collège de France et membre du groupe d’expert défend son point de vue (simplifiction de certaines règles), tandis que l’écrivain Philippe SOLLERS dit ses craintes d’appauvrissement de la langue. Des élèves font part de leurs difficultés en orthographe, et quelques exemples dessinés illustrent certaines subtilités de l’orthographe et leurs simplifications recommandées.
