An GIA statement claims the murder of the 7 least Trappists kidnapped two months ago in Algeria, in a monastery in the Medea region. The statement was sent to a Moroccan radio station in Tangier on 21 May. The French authorities ask for confirmation of the information, before organizing the repatriation of religious and French nationals who are still in Algeria.

In Algeria, seven Trappist monks from the monastery of Tibhirine were kidnapped in Medea, southwest of Algiers, by a commando of armed men. Opened in 1934, this Cistercian monastery estimated by the population and the authorities is located in the fief of the GIA, on the foothills of the Blidéen Atlas.
