In Guadeloupe, on the sidelines of the commemorations of the abolition of slavery this week, another memory was evoked at Pointe-à-Pitre, that of the riots of May 26 and 27, 1967. During these two days, construction workers protesting in front of the Chamber of Commerce during unsuccessful negotiations were shot dead by the security forces; of the high school students and students who joined them the next day, they were caught in the fire of the police forces in their turn. Officially eight deaths, the number of victims would be eighty-seven according to some. The first of them was Jacques Nestor, a young member of GONG (Groupe d'organisations nationales de la Guadeloupe). A tragedy long forgotten. Local associations paid tribute to the victims through a reconstruction and a fresco. Since two days, Guadeloupe is agitated by major social unrest. The Guadeloupean independence organizations demonstrated today to support Georges Faisans sentenced to three years in prison and imprisoned in the Paris region of Fresnes where he has been on hunger strike for more than fifty days. Justice has condemned him for molesting a teacher who himself beat and insulted a black student. Roads, bridges are blocked, shops are closed, cars have been set on fire.
