The new powers of the European Parliament

The European Parliament is 40 years old. The 518 Members of the European Parliament, meeting in Strasbourg today celebrated an anniversary in the presence of SIMONE VEIL and PIERRE PFLIMLIN. Philippe BETTE talks about the new powers of the European Parliament after the Maastricht Treaty. MEPs will now be able to take decisions in a number of areas such as education, public health, consumer affairs, research, the environment and trans-European networks. This Treaty will allow a kind of rebalancing of powers between the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the Commission in Brussels.
