The "Little Red Book: Quotations from President Mao Tse-tung", published by the Government of the People’s Republic of China from 1964 and which is the propaganda medium of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, comes at the top of the successes of bookstores in France in 1967, right after the Goncourt award. That year, 15,000 copies of this "Little Red Book" were sold daily since January. Interview in this context of Jean-Luc GODARD who has just directed "The Chinese", film telling the story of a French student who reads "The Little Red Book" of the Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung. In front of his editing table, the filmmaker acknowledges feeling close to the affinities of the students, being an "old student" himself. He explains on the choice of the subject of the film: "I had the idea for a long time to make a film on the politicization or depoliticization of students. The "Red Book" has ignited the situation," he says.
