During the evening debate following the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty by the French (51% for yes and 49% for no), the singer Francis LALANNE who voted NO spoke: 'I voted no to this treaty because I think it is bad for Europe... Thanks be to God, there is Denmark that said NO...to paraphrase Shakespeare a little in "Hamlet" that says: "There is something rotten in the kingdom of Denmark", it is not in the kingdom of Denmark that there is something rotten, it’s in Europe right now and it’s called the Maastricht Treaty".
