La loi sur la laïcité, proclamait, après bien des débats, la séparation des églises et de l'Etat. C'est Aristide Briand (rapporteur du projet) qui saura trouver un compromis. In fine, la loi sera votée le 3 juillet 1905 et promulguée le 9 décembre : "La République assure la liberté de conscience mais ne reconnait ni ne salarie ni ne subventionne aucun culte".
