A propos de Bardamu, le personnage principal de son roman "Voyage au bout de la nuit", Céline, à Meudon, chez lui, répond aux questions de Louis Pauwels, sur son engagement volontaire durant la Première Guerre mondiale (à 18 ans), par lyrisme. Il se souvient de son état d'esprit à cette époque et admet avoir eu peur de la mort parce qu'alors il avait encore des raisons de vivre, ce qui n'est plus le cas au moment où il s'exprime.
