Hélène Carrère d'Encausse, a historian specialising in the countries of Eastern Europe, predicted the end of Soviet totalitarianism in her book The Shattered Empire in the late 1970s. She became an academician in 1990 and first female Perpetual Secretary in 1999. Here she is an expert on Russian history, a member of the Academy, but also a reference to her childhood and her origins.
