Resumption of nuclear tests: reactions to the National Assembly

The announcement of the head of state, Jacques CHIRAC, on the resumption of nuclear tests in the Pacific, in Polynesia, aroused many protests and controversy in France. Report illustrated by a session in the National Assembly with the intervention of Alain JUPPE (Prime Minister) and Jean-Michel BOUCHERON (PS) who declares from his bench "I would have preferred that the first international message of the President be a message of peace" and by the reactions in the corridors of the Assembly of Jean-François DENIAU (UDF) who deplores the inadequacy of explanations on the part of the government and Jacques BRUNHES (PCF) who complains of a policy with "considerable sums for death".
