Habib Bourguiba dismissed

Tunisian President Habib BOURGUIBA (84) was dismissed by Prime Minister Zine el-Abidine BEN ALI. According to the official version, his advanced age and state of health no longer allowed him to manage the affairs of the state in a healthy manner. BEN ALI therefore invoked Article 57 of the Constitution, which provides for the replacement of the President in the event of an inability to exercise power, thus becoming President of the Republic and head of the armies without having to hold elections.
