Excerpt from President Lyndon Johnson’s State of the Union speech in the Congress Gallery in Washington. Regarding the Vietnam War, it first glorifies the sacrifice and "blood shed" by American soldiers to defend the freedom of the country then recalls the origins of the conflict with North Vietnam: its will to conquer the South. Then in a rhetorical question he asks: "We can abandon South Vietnam to its aggressors or we can stay and fight alongside the Vietnamese south. We will stay and stay!"
