International Conference on Peace and Security in Iraq
[Source: France 3 documentation] France today called on the international community to act quickly to counter the Islamic State (IS), at the conference on peace and security in Iraq held in Paris three months after the beginning of the jihadist offensive in that country. Some 30 countries, including the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, are discussing the security, humanitarian and political aspects of the response to the challenge posed by ISIS, which has taken over several regions in Iraq and Syria. The conference should also clarify the role of each country that has expressed its wish to participate in the international coalition announced ten days ago by the United States at a NATO summit in Wales. A dozen Western countries have agreed to form the core of this coalition and Washington has obtained the commitment of ten Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to fight against IS, a Sunni organization stemming from Al Qaeda. FRANCOIS HOLLANDE: "the fight of Iraqis against terrorists is also ours. And we must engage together, and this is the meaning of this conference, alongside the Iraqi authorities, clearly, loyally, and strongly " FOUAD MASSOUM: "in this context we ask once again that regular air operations against terrorist sites continue. We must not allow them to take shelter, they must not have a sanctuary. " As the conference on Iraq opened, the French army conducted its first reconnaissance flights over Iraqi territory. Two Rafale and a refueller took off from the French base in al Dhafra, United Arab Emirates.
