The 1964 Tokyo Games were the first in Asia. Symbol of peace after the horrors of World War II, Yoshinori Sakai was born in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the day the atomic bomb destroyed the city, is chosen to be the last bearer of the flame. Two sports are emerging: judo and volleyball, the first women’s team sport at the Games. In addition, this is the last time that athletics competitions are contested on an ash track and that the times are measured with a manual stopwatch.
