The question of a municipal police in Paris is still being debated in the Paris Council. Until now, traffic and hygiene issues are in the hands of the Prefect of Police. The mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac, is calling for an extension of the police powers and therefore the prerogatives of the Council of Paris in terms of traffic and hygiene.
