A l'aube du XXème siècle, le service du Renseignement français était appelé "Deuxième Bureau". Après divers changements de dénominations, il devint DGSE (Direction générale de la Sécurité extérieure). En 1970, le commandant Jacques Abtey, ancien agent du Deuxième Bureau, relate sa découverte du service en tant que jeune lieutenant.
