Mayotte, département français d'outre-mer, souffre régulièrement de pénuries d'eau. Quasiment dépourvue de nappes phréatiques, l'île dépend de ses réserves d'eau de pluie. Quand elles sont insuffisantes, réapparaît "un éternel problème, qu'on n'arrive pas à solutionner" selon Houlam Chamssidine, ingénieur Mayotte nature environnement. Des investissements ont été effectués par l'Etat notamment dans une usine de dessalement mais la technique est trop onéreuse pour constituer la seule solution comme le confirme Ronan Le Goaster, chargé de mission eau potable du syndicat intercommunal d'eau et d'assainissement.
