Statement by Alain Poher, defeated in the second round of the presidential election

On 15 June 1969, in the second round of the presidential election, the centre-right candidate Alain POHER, who won 41.8% of the vote, was clearly beaten by the Gaullist Georges POMPIDOU, who won 58.21%. After having held the interim presidency of the republic after the resignation of General DE GAULLE in 1969, Alain POHER deplores in his statement the strong abstention, which he attributes to the voting instructions of the communist Jacques DUCLOS.
