L'URSS, avec son programme spactial Vostok I, vient d'envoyer le premier homme dans l'espace, Youri Gagarine. Interviewé à ce propos, l'astrophysicien Jean-Claude Pecker dit : "Ah c'est un exploit extraordinaire bien entendu (...) Ce que je trouve le plus remarquable dans l'expérience de ce matin, c'est si vous voulez, le degré de sécurité auquel on est arrivé...".
