Interviewé, François Erval, directeur de la collection "Idées" chez Gallimard, explique que la volonté d'éditer de grands auteurs en France, au format poche, lui est venue à la gare de Munich, dans une grande librairie de livres de poches : "...j'ai constaté qu'il y avait un jeune homme, en pantalon court, qui réclamait énergiquement des livres de Sartre, de Camus et de Malraux...".
