Speech in English by Charlie Chaplin after his presentation of the Legion of Honour
Live from the evening of the 25th Cannes International Film Festival, Charlie CHAPLIN has just received the Legion of Honour from the hands of Jacques DUHAMEL, Minister of Cultural Affairs. Very moved, Charlie CHAPLIN spoke in English: "I am too stupid to speak in French, so I will continue in English that I do not speak very well either. It is wonderful to be here tonight and to see how kind you have received me. It is so beautiful and touching. Living in Switzerland, I went to a store and I said "Do you have anything black?" (in French) They said, "What do you want?"" Give a black tie, please"; Anyway, it’s so wonderful tonight, and of course, it’s a great honor, I’m so moved that I don’t know if I speak intelligently or not. it’s very nice to see you all here and to know that you’ve enjoyed me, not only in the past but also in the present."
