The International Brigades, an organized armed body but without firepower
Testimonies of former volunteers of the International Brigades. During the Spanish War, these combat units brought together about 40,000 people of 53 different nationalities against a common enemy, fascism, in 1936. In this excerpt, Henri Rol Tangy, André Piéplu and Louis Blésy evoke the Brigades as an armed corps. Since they were made up of volunteers who had done 14-18, they were organized as combat units. There were also aviation squadrons. However, they were sorely lacking in strike power, which they lacked in the face of Franco’s troops.
