Record du monde de plongée avec le bathyscaphe Trieste : 10 916 m
Le 23 janvier 1960, au fond de la fosse des Mariannes (sud du Japon), au large de l'île de Guam, le bathyscaphe "Trieste" (sous-marin réduit spécialisé dans l'exploration des grands fonds), avec à son bord le Français Jacques Piccard et l'Américain Don Walsh, se pose à 10 916 m sous la surface (plus qu'une Everest inversée). C'est évidemment un record absolu, jamais l'être humain n'était descendu si profond... Explications en images.
