En 1965, Georges Perec, avec son roman "Les Choses", décrivait avec lucidité le malaise de l'homme face à la société matérialiste. Il explique qu'il a utilisé le langage publicitaire pour s'interroger sur la société de consommation et les frustrations qu'elle occasionne. Ses propos sont illustrés par des images de voitures, de meubles et d'objets de luxe.
