At a press conference, General de Gaulle begins by making a very positive assessment of the French economy compared to Europe and the free world (productivity, number of researchers, leading-edge activities such as the Caravelle, the Concorde, the Diamant rocket, colour television). He then announced "without alarm", the "disappearance of all customs within the common market".
